Date(s) : July 30 (Friday) – October13(Wednesday), 2021 (closed on Thursdays (except on holidays))* Event extended due to popular demand.
Time : Café d’Art 10:00 – 16:30 / Museum Shop 9:30 – 16:30
We are happy to announce that the 12th installation of SHOP@CAFE, a series of small exhibitions that was first
launched in 2016, will be held at the Cafe d’Art and Museum Shop. This time, we are featuring the book designer and
creator Katsumi Komagata and his POP SCOPE series of images that mysteriously emerge from a complex structure of
overlapping papers. A selection of picture books and mobiles by Komagata will also be available for purchase.
From a distance, viewers see a simple yet striking pop-style image of an animal, but a closer examination reveals it to be a complex three-dimensional work consisting of layers of precisely trimmed papers. Each image is meticulously produced by hand, with papers layered to create shadows and gradations that produce each animal’s distinctive look. In this exhibition/sale, about 20 of the series’ most popular designs will be on display. When a purchase is made, an order for the work is sent to the artist who then produces it. The finished item is then signed, framed and delivered directly to the purchaser’s home in about two weeks.
Born in Shizuoka prefecture in 1953, after working at the Nippon Design Center, Komagata moved to the United States in 1977. He returned to Japan and established ONE STROKE. Since then, he has published many picture books. With the launch of the shop at The Museum of Modern Art in New York in 1990, his activities spread internationally and he began holding solo book exhibitions and workshops around the world. Since 2014, he has been teaching the younger generations at Rikkyo University and Joshibi University of Art and Design. In 2019, his exhibition Small Design: Katsumi Komagata was launched at Itabashi Art Museum and later traveled to Fukuoka, Iwate and Ashikaga. It is currently at the Vangi Sculpture Garden Museum. He has received many awards, including the New York ADC Silver Award, Paris PRIZE FOR CREATIVITY, 2000, 2010, 2016 Italy Bologna RAGAZZI Award Excellence Award, 2002 Swiss International Children’s Book Award (FEE) Special Award, 2006 GOOD DESIGN, Universal Design Award、2007 GOOD DESIGN Award and many others.
