Gunma Symphony Orchestra
Founded in November 1945 in an area devastated by war, Gunma Symphony Orchestra was Japan’s first regional orchestra, founded under the slogan “Reconstruction through Music.” Since then, it has been cherished by the Gunma citizens who affectionately refer to it by the nickname “Gunkyo.” Marking its 80th anniversary this year, the orchestra continues to engage in a wide range of musical activities, including regular concerts and traveling music classes, enjoying its status as a cultural symbol of Gunma prefecture. The orchestra recently relocated to the Takasaki Arts Theatre (open since September 2019) where it seeks to further advance and improve its performance activities under the leadership of principal conductor Norichika Iimori, who assumed this position in April 2023. https://www.gunkyo.com/

Hara Museum ARC
Hara Museum ARC, which originally opened in 1988 in Shibukawa, Gunma as the annex to the Hara Museum of Contemporary Art in Shinagawa, Tokyo, became the sole venue when the two museums merged in 2021. Its expansive highland grounds allow visitors to experience art within a lush environment against a backdrop of blue skies. The museum is home to two major collections: The Hara Museum Collection of contemporary art, amassed by Toshio Hara, chairman of the Arc-en-Ciel Art Foundation, the museum’s parent organization, encompasses painting and sculptural works dating from the 1950s onward, spanning from the masters of such 20th century art movements as Abstract Expressionism and Pop Art to artists active in the art scene of today. The Hara Rokuro Collection, on the other hand, is a collection of early modern Japanese paintings, crafts, and Chinese art collected by Meiji-era businessman Rokuro Hara (1842-1933) which has its own special exhibition space called the Kankai Pavilion.
