Art in Town is a Hara Museum ARC members-only event that lets you experience art at a variety of places beyond the walls of the museum. On this occasion, we take you to the UESHIMA MUSEUM, an art museum launched last year in Shibuya, Tokyo by art collector Kankuro Ueshima.
As an art lover and ardent visitor to art museums, Ueshima bought his first work of art in 2016. He soon became a serious collector of contemporary art, eventually founding the UESHIMA COLLECTION in 2022. It has since become a focus of attention with nearly 700 works of art.
The UESHIMA MUSEUM’s building used to be the British School in Tokyo before it was transformed into a contemporary art museum, each floor from the basement to the fifth featuring works on various themes by artists spanning multiple countries and generations. Visitors will be impressed by the space’s aura of contemporaneity that is at the core of Ueshima’s collecting activities. We hope you take advantage of this rare opportunity to be guided by the museum director Ueshima himself on a tour of the facility.

Ueshima was born in Chiba prefecture in 1979 and graduated from Shibuya Kyoiku Gakuen Makuhari High School in 1998. He entered the Faculty of Science at the University of Tokyo. He founded his first company while still a student in the university’s Faculty of Engineering and has since continued developing diverse businesses as an entrepreneur and investor. In addition to running his business, Ueshima has been a regular visitor to auction houses and galleries both in Japan and abroad, amassing a wide range of works by leading Japanese artists such as Yayoi Kusama, Takashi Murakami and Kohei Nawa, and overseas artists such as Gerhard Richter, Damien Hirst and Banksy, as well as works by young, up-and-coming artists.
