Report: Workshop “Etsu Egami: Did You Get It?”

On October 16, as part of Gunma AIR Art Project 2022 sponsored by Gunma prefecture and the Gunma Prefectural Education and Culture Foundation, we held a workshop led by artist and former participant in the project Etsu Egami.

Egami is a young, up-and-coming internationally active artist based in Japan and China. After studying abroad in Germany, she expanded her activities to encompass the rest of Europe, creating many works that explore the nature of “communication” informed by her rich experiences overseas.

This workshop took place in two parts. In the first part, participants were asked to draw an image based on their visualization of the definition of a word in the dictionary. This was a visualization of how humans conceive of things differently, even things that everyone knows such as dogs, mountains and elephants. Each of the results when shared garnered much surprise and laughter among the participants.

In the second part, participants played a version of “Telephone” in which each person would successively describe using language what was visually depicted in a picture. The game revealed how information received through the eyes change when conveyed through sound, and how variations in the verbally conveyed image and communication errors add up to replace the original image with completely different information. Many discoveries and much fun was had by everyone in both parts 1 and 2.
